When it comes to social media, you need to get it. But what the heck does that mean?!
Get it: own it. Own your brand’s social media presence. It’s happening with or without you, so get involved and be a part of what’s happening. The people using social media are shaping your brand’s profile: they’re either talking about it (a message, no doubt, you want to have a hand in shaping), or they’re not talking about it (which often means they’re talking about your competition). Either way, you need to be there as an integral part of what’s taking place.
Get it: seize it. Social media provides you the unique and unsurpassed opportunity to reach people who are interested in your brand on a one-on-one basis. Every day – even multiple times each day! No other marketing vehicle allows you to reach so many, in such a personal way, and for such a low cost. Seize it!
Get it: understand it. Even if you’re working with the best pro out there, you still need to have a fundamental understanding of what social media is and how it impacts your business. Why? Because without that understanding, there’s only so far you can go (and without arming yourself with the basics, you’re susceptible to social media snake oil salesmen…and there are plenty out there!). While you’d certainly trust a good doctor to perform surgery, you’d still want to have an idea of what’s taking place and what the consequences might be. Same goes for social media: trust who you’re working with, but have a stake in it personally, too.
